Miss Doan's BBC Proms Highlights.

I thought I'd do this about every two weeks to keep you going through the summer holidays. There are so many excellent Proms this year, but please bear in mind that these are personal highlights. To see the whole programme, please click here. For more details about each Prom below, click on the relevant Prom number.

Prom 9: Wednesday 23 July
Includes Symphony no. 4 by Mendelssohn, Piano Concerto no. 2 and Symphony no.2 by Brahms.

Prom 11: Friday 25 July
Nocturnes by Debussy and Pictures at an Exhibition by Musorgsky.

Prom 15: Monday 28 July
Orchestra members will be interested to hear Beethoven's 5th Symphony, as well as a string version of his Grosse Fuge.

Prom 16: Tuesday 29 July
A British half and a German half - just the way I like it! Janine Jansen performs Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 and the concert finishes with Richard Strauss' amusing tone poem, Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche.

Prom 23: Sunday 3 August
Beethoven's 1st Symphony and Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. A wonderful way to spend a Sunday evening!

Prom 24: Monday 4 August
Some Bach and Rachmaninov's 2nd Symphony - need I say more?!

Please have a look at the huge amount of information on the BBC Proms website: you can have a look at the programme notes online an hour before the concerts and of course, the Listen Again facility is invaluable. We are so lucky to have such a prestigious music festival on our doorstep: I urge you to make the most of it!

King's Singers: Gold

These guys turn 50 this year. Obviously none of them is 50 years old, but if you don't know this group, then you should get to know them. Formed in 1968, this all six-piece male vocal ensemble have made a name for their stunning singing, ranging from Renaissance polyphony to arrangement of more current hits. For me, I have always loved going through the huge numbers of arrangements that they have made available to us. Most of them are really approachable by the amateur ensemble, and over the years, some of their arrangements have become real Vocal Ensemble favourites. I try to make a point of teaching And So it Goes  to every cohort, and this, along with Lonesome Road and She's Always a Woman  will remain very dear to past and present members' hearts. The King's Singers have recently released Gold , a three-album compilation to celebrate their 50th Anniversary. Listen to it here . Summer Concert Information

The Summer Concert is on Tuesday 18th July. A very detailed Parent Mail has been sent - please make sure your parents have checked it. On the day, we will meet at 1205 (start of P5) in Music. Make sure you have all your music, instruments, and a packed lunch. Bring water . We will go by coach to St. Paul's Church, Blandford Road, and rehearse all afternoon. If you are in Year 11 or 13, you may make your own way there, be there latest 1245, but earlier if you want to be helpful. You will be making your way home from St. Paul's at 1525, so please let us know asap if this is going to be a problem. You will need to be back at St. Paul's for 6.30pm, in Summer Uniform (black or black and white for Yr11 and above). Any questions to Music Captains. It is going to be a great concert. Your task: In your houses, prepare a performance of: Bob Marley - Three Little Birds and A song of your choice You will select one piece to perform to Miss Doan and Mr Guinane (before lunch), and  select one to perform to your peers this afternoon. The rules: 1. Everyone in the house must make a significant contribution to both performances 2. Be considerate, and share equipment between houses, organising rotas if  necessary 3. Song choice: pick something appropriate, not too difficult and musically  appealing. We will help with location of lyrics and music but the majority of this  must be done by yourselves. 4.
